Kopitar new Kaptain?

There have been a lot of articles (one article; multiple places) out there linking Kopitar's name to words like "lead" and "teach" and others varieties of the terms. He is ready to take responsibility for this puzzle of a team and lead us to the playoffs gallantly*. There are ads about it and with the only other real option stemming from the lips of fans (but really, what do they know?) being Armstrong, it looks like he would be the more logical answer. Brown is also an option to consider, but I am doubting it; I think it would be a good idea, but Kopitar gets more exposure and is the flashy, fan favorite; he is everything L.A. is about. Me? I am going for the wild card in this equation and putting my money on Handzus.

*I had to put that at the end of the sentence because they never actually use the word 'gallantly' in the article.

There is a lot that Kopitar really has going for him, to put it lightly. You can never fully appreciate the tricks that Kopi has under his sleeve until you see it all collectively. The "Requiem For a A Dream" doesn't hurt the theatrics, either.

With the awe-inspiring talents, depth of plays and collective demeanor, captaincy doesn't seem so far fetched. With all of this backing him up, it leaves us asking:

Is this the year for Kopitar?

LA Kings' Photos of the Week: 9/28/08

Armstrong doesn't score very often, so we have to make a note of it when he does.

Teddy Purcell for the shootout win.

Goal celebration: Anze and Moulson

It's a good thing the Phoenix jerseys are already red.

Saved the best for last; Simmonds, Martinez, Boyle, and Purcell after the shootout win. It's like a glimpse into the future.

Frozen Fury XI Kings lose 4-3

I would trade Bernier for the chance to see a fight between Ivanans and Willsie.

The shootout line up had Oscar Moller missing, as well as Jarret Stoll. With the shootout looking 0-1 Avs, Terry Murray sent out Armstrong to win things for us. Okay, listen; I know you haven't been with us long enough to know this, Terry Murray, so I'll tell you now; never put Armstrong in the shootout*. I don't know why you strayed away from the Kopitar, Brown, whoever-is-good lineup. Sure Kopi and Brown didn't score the other night, but that doesn't mean that you take them out. Kopi with a broken arm is better than Armstrong on a good day.

Frozen Fury Record: 8-2-2
Against Colorado: 6-2-2
Preseason Record: 3-0-1

Logo Tournament Part 2

In pointless news:

The Kings' ECHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, has made it to the Final Four in The Hockey News' Logo Tournament. I'm sorry, it'll all be over soon. They beat out the Florida Everblades (either that or they withdrew in embarrassment). The next up is the Rimouski Oceanic, which I am pretty confident that the Reign will beat. Then, they will go on to lose to either Montreal or Detroit in the finals. If it's Montreal, we're gonna cry like it's 1993.

I knew it...

I knew that we wouldn't get Schneider. Everyone was so sure that DL was just making Burke sweat a little, but no, I knew that he wasn't going to do it. I knew for two reasons:

1. It would be a smart move.
He hasn't seemed to be doing a lot of that lately. I am pretty sure that he is boycotting strategy, or he is just really ahead of the curve. It was also a bit of an obvious move and Deano doesn't do predictable.

2. I didn't think he would get Schneider.
Every time I try to make a prediction about what the big DL will do next, he always makes me look stupid and does the opposite. The one time that I don't voice my prophecies, he follows them. He shall parish.

So Schneider goes to Atlanta for Ken Klee (D), Brad Larson (LW) and Chad Painchauld (LW).

Schneider gets $5.75 million*
Klee gets $1.25 million
Larson gets $560, 000
Painchauld gets $565, 000
Anaheim gets $3 million in cap space
*Plus he gets to wear those snazzy Atlanta pajamas when he plays...

Moral in Anaheim: A penny saved is a penny earned.

Moral in LA: Pull the trigger!*

*it relates so much, it's frustrating

Moment of Silence Part 3

The following players have been sent back down to the Juniors because Drew Doughty started a nasty rumor that they had Chlamydia*:
*probably true

Dwight King
Position: Left Wing.........Shoots: Left

Height: 6'3''...................DOB: July 5, 1989 (Age 19)
Weight: 218...................Born: Meadowlake, SK, Canada

Drafted: 4th round choice, 109th overall in 2007
Returning to: Lethbridge Hurricanes, WHL

Weight: 185................Born: Whiterock, BC, Canada

Drafted: 1st round, 13th overall in 2008
Returning to: Regina Pats, WHL

For these players, we have a moment of silence to remember them. There's a first rounder we'll never get back. Should have gotten Erik Karlsson, at least then Ersberg would have someone to talk to. Never fear, though, we still have 29 forwars, 17 defensemen and a whopping 8 goalies.

Kings 4, Avalanche 3 SO

The roster looked pretty good last night, with the exception of an absent AFro because of "lower body soreness*", Babs was a no-show because he heard Ryan Smyth was going to be there, and Patty O is still unsigned.

This needed it's own post

Shhh...ssshhh....no words....just Clune

Moment of Silence Part 2

Another one to add to the books, but for a different reason. We are not mourning the loss of his talent because we assumed he had forgotten it at home, nay; we mourn the consequences of a Denis Gauthier hit on Sunday, September 21 that resulted in a separated shoulder. He underwent surgery yesterday and is out indefinitely.

Marc-Andre Cliche (klEEsh)
Position: Forward......Shoots: Right

Height: 6'0''.............DOB: March 23, 1987 (Age 21)
Weight: 175.............Born: Rouyn-noranda, QC, Canada

Drafted: 2nd round, 56th overall in 2005 (NY Rangers)
Returning to: Someplace soft

Oh yea, I forgot...

Richard Clune (kloun)
Position: Left Wing....Shoots: Left

Height: 6'0''..............DOB: April 25, 1987 (Age 21)
Weight:195..............Born: Toronto, ON, Canada

Drafted: 3rd round, 71st overall in 2005 (Dallas Stars)
Returning to: Hell

Not that anyone cares* but Clune is out because of an injury sustained during the game at Staples Center on Monday, September 22 against the Phoenix Coyotes. The story is that he broke a bone in his chest after a hit along the boards during the second period. I don't question that he broke a bone, but are you sure it was from a hit along the boards? I'm just asking because he got taken down twice and I'm pretty sure that broken bones are results of crumbling under two hundred pounds of coyote meat. All I know is that the ice didn't absorb the impact.

*not that anyone should

For these, except Clune, we have a moment of silence to remember. Try to remember the return address for Clune while you are at it, or does Dallas follow the 'You break it, you bought it' rule?

And a moment of silence for the ones we've lost

Three players have been sent back to the Juniors:

Bryan Cameron

Position: Center....Shoots: Right

Height: 5'10''........DOB: February 25, 1989 (Age 19)

Weight: 175.........Born: Brampton, ON, Canada

Drafted: 3rd round choice, 82nd overall in 2007
Returning to: Belleville Bulls, OHL

Matt Fillier

Position: Center.....Shoots: Left

Height: 6'1''...........DOB: October 5, 1988 (Age 19)
Weight: 180..........Born: New Glasgow, NS, Canada

Drafted: 7th round choice, 188th overall in 2007
Returning to: St. John's Fog Devils QMHL

Geordie Wudrick
Position: LW..........Shoots: Left

Height: 6'3''...........DOB: April 9, 1990 (Age 18)
Weight: 204..........Born: New Westminster, BC, Canada

Drafted: 3rd Round choice, 88th overall in 2008
Returning to: Swift Current Broncos WHL

And a leftwinger named Olivier Legault was released from his tryout agreement.*

*douche

For these, except Olivier, we have a moment of silence to remember them. Or at least try to remember what they did because I sure as hell don't have a clue. Have fun in Canada, now go, you're taking up too much sun.

Clune is spelled C-L-O-W-N

No, no, that's 'C' as is crotch. Yes. C-L-O-W-N...no, 'N', 'N' as is NOT 'M'!

This guy has been described as an Avery-type player, and I agree for the most part. I say for the most part because 1. Avery is not a bad player, skill wise and 2. Avery would put up a good fight at least 90% of the time. This guy is just out to piss people off and then hide behind Ivanans' heel.

If he makes the team at all in his lifetime, there will be no shortage of 'Clune the Goon' or 'Clune the Clown' headlines.

What I thought was funny was that even when he appeared to be winning, the other guy would somehow take him down. In every single fight he was in (about 3, I think) that was the outcome. It was mainly coming from the actions or direct fist of one Mr. Adam Keefe of the Phoenix Coyotes. There was a little of this:

Just hit the bench, you are embarrassing us...

Afterwards, it was followed by a little of that (down there, just below):

That's Ivanans for ya, always leading by example...

Even Calder got into a fight that night. There must have been a full moon out or something, I don't know.

There was a sweet little moment, though, when Ivanans went into the box for...oh, to choose the right words...beating the tonsils out of Keefe. He went in and a bit later, Clune joined him after getting his ass kicked. They were sitting in the penalty box and talking; Ivanans was gesturing out what looked to be a discussion about a play. I like to think that he was giving Clune tips on how to fight better. Ivanans then left the box and Clune was there when a fan was talking to him through the glass, motioning towards the ice. I like to think that he was giving Clune tips on how to fight better.

Kings 6, Coyotes 4 (this season is going to be miserable)

Preseason games. What can you do? It was a pretty awkward game, with there being only about a hundred fans -- there were 3, 382 more fans at the game in Kansas City. At least the hundred that were here got to see an entertaining game. I think that the players on both teams have had a rubber band tied around their balls for the past five months because there was quite a bit of violence going on in the first period alone, about five....altercations. I can't really remember anyone having a type of spectacular performance that made me feel should lead them to a spot on the team. Calder seemed more proactive; I don't know if it was because it was just a preseason game, because he felt like the cool kid with half the team away, or because he could grow a beard if he so chose -- maybe all of the above -- but it was noticeable. He even got into a fight. It was kind of just a roughing thing, but that's only because the refs and linesmen broke it up. I do have a complaint about a goal that he cheated us out of because he has the quick release of a rusty slinky, but hey, it's Calder, as long as that's the best complaint, that's not bad.

There were three alternate captains for the Kings tonight: Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar, and Matt Greene. At this point I am wondering if that kind of thing is a gift or curse for the Kings players that have it adorn their jerseys. It's kind of the scarlet letter of the franchise; after that 'A' goes on your chest, it's all downhill from there, everything changes.

This is what I found hilarious, and shrugged off with a "Wudja luka tha? Pffft... preseason..."* :

*My speech is horrible during post season.

Goals
Period 1:
12:05 -- #58 Meckler; #71 Boyle*
09:19 -- #7 Armstrong; #51 Moller, #41 Ivanans

Period 2:
17:52 -- #71 Boyle; #51 Moller, #76 Voinov*
12:42 -- #7 Armstrong; #21 Gauthier, #19 Calder

Period 3:
01:17 -- #51 Moller; #58 Meckler, #49 Harrold*
00:01 -- #58 Meckler; #2 Greene, #11 Kopitar (empty net)

*Power play goal

Armstrong was the superstar? Oh, and Babs was out after the second period. You may argue that he was just out because they wanted to give Taylor a little ice time, see how he performs and you may humor yourself as long as you can. He let, in my opinion, two very bad goals in. Two out of four is not a comforting number. Okay, hold on, I'm not done. I will agree that maybe one of the two was because of a faulty defense, although the argument could go either way.

I will have to have a post about the fighting tomorrow, I have a few snappy lines in my arsenal. That makes things pretty difficult. The chippy playing was pretty much the only thing the game had going for it. Other than that, there were a bunch of disconnected passes, people were falling down more than they should have, sloppy checks, tons of broken sticks, lack of communication, and bumbling plays. Now, I guess I could shrug this off with a "Wudja luka tha? Pffft... preseason..." , but what worries me is that in about 3 weeks, the season starts and the team looks like crap. I know, we were playing with half a team, but we had the good half! What are we missing? Handzus and Zeiler? Are Matt Ellis and Drew Doughty really going to make that big of a difference? I have a feeling that this season is going to be miserable.

Preseason Game Day: Phoenix Coyotes

Games......GAMES.....GAMES!

I know how you feel...

It's the first day of fall; the ambiance can't be more perfect if they light Staples Center via candlelight. Although I must admit I was sufficiently peeved that the team was to be split in two with half of them going to Kansas City. I was sure that, with the Kansas City game being a promo type environment, I was to see a loosely strung together group of rookies get their asses kicked by Phoenix. While the outcome may still be the same, the chances of it happening are not as great. The rosters will look a little like this:

At Staples Center:
2 -- Matt Greene
3 -- Jack Johnson
7 -- Derek Armstrong
11 -- Anze Kopitar
19 -- Kyle Calder
21 -- Denis Gauthier
23 -- Dustin Brown
24 -- Alexander Frolov
35 -- Jason LaBarbera
37 -- Thomas Hickey
41 -- Raitis Ivanans
46 -- Daniel Taylor
49 -- Peter Harrold
51 -- Oscar Moller
58 -- David Meckler
61 -- Trevor Lewis
63 -- Scott Parse
68 -- Brady Murray
71 -- Brian Boyle
76 -- Viatcheslav Voynov

At Kansas City:

8 -- Matt Ellis
15 -- Brad Richardson
26 -- Michal Handzus
28 -- Jarret Stoll
32 -- Jonathan Quick
33 -- Kevin Westgarth
34 -- Marty Murray
36 -- Jeff Zatkoff
42 -- Tom Preissing
43 -- Joe Piskula
44 -- Davis Drewiske
52 -- Gabe Gauthier
53 -- Alec Martinez
54 -- Ted Purcell
56 -- Richard Clune
57 -- Wayne Simmonds
67 -- Marc-Andre Cliche (won't play)
70 -- Matt Moulson
73 -- John Zeiler
79 -- Colten Teubert
80 -- Drew Doughty

I feel robbed. We get Kopi, JJ and Babs and Kansas City gets Zeiler and Ellis. Why are all of the superstars going to Kansas City? Hahahaha! I laugh in the face of AEG! AHA-HAHA! What I am genuinely upset about is that Handzus is going there. Don't you dare lump him up with them! Okay, he had a bad, bad, bad year. Okay, we paid him big, big, big money. I still have faith in him though, I don't know why, but I feel the need to defend him.

Perhaps it's the 'gentle giant' look in his profile picture...

I just hope that Zeus turns things around this year. I mean, you can't be too mad at him; he was right there, in terms of short-handed goals, with Patty O. I do love a short-handed goal. Here's to hoping that he gets out of that category that the coaching staff clearly feels he belongs in.

Chances are that you won't care....

I lumped both of these sort of news articles together because it would just be a waste of energy to have to put them in separate stories, and I don't really think that you will care that much, mom. In any case....

1. Aubin

Former goalie of the LA Kings, Jean-Sebastien Aubin, has just signed a one-year contract, the amount being unknown or so deeply tangeld on the web that I stopped caring before I could find it. To be honest, I don't particularly like the guy, not on a professional level...that's not how I judge a player. I don't like him because he was the link in the first trade between LA and Anaheim. He did what he was here for; he proved to be a temporary sling to hold the team together while Mr. Glass was out with some obscure injury*. JS was 5-6-1 with a 3.19 GAA...hey, he's not Cloutier. When he went to Anaheim, he never set foot on NHL ice, but that is because their number one goalie was a JS with a Stanley Cup Ring on his resume. Well, Aubin, good luck and here's to hoping that you stay in Philly longer than it takes for them to be able to pronounce your name.

*For the record, I am not saying that Bab's injuries are questionable, I am just saying that it seems he has a target on his chest or something because he is always getting hurt...or stabbed. Yeah, Ryan Smyth, I remember.

To avoid having to put up two separate pictures, just pretend that Aubin was still with Toronto when this was taken...

2. Avery
Apparently AskMen.com thinks that Sean Avery has impeccable fashion sense.....and that he is a man. No disrespect to Savery (as I imagine all the ladies, who don't care much for talent, call him), I just assume that he knows that he is a joker. But I don't want to argue this, I'd rather move onto a topic that wouldn't cause such a heated debate....like abortion or something. To get to the point, there is an interview with Avery about what he was doing over the summer at Vogue (I don't want to talk about it, just read the interview), (sort of) the type of player he is, and what he thinks are the biggest fashion faux pas. Or you could see how many toothpicks can fit under your thumbnail.

Lombardi means "procrastination" in Italian

Haha... funny Dilbert.

I know that there are a multitude of things that DL has to think about before signing Patty-O, (I refused to call him "Sully" and then have to call Stoll "Stolly". That's just going to get ridiculous.) it's just that with training camp here and he not being there, well, it just looks bad. You can hear it from the horse's mouth, but I warn you, it's not very comforting. In short, he talks about not being very close to signing Patty-O and then going on to make some ship reference with the term "on board" and yadda, yadda, yadda. I don't doubt the man at all*, but with this happening after the whole ob ray lake bay (for the fans that dare not hear his name) thing, and hearing that DL just took too much time, it's just really frustrating. With so much time that has already passed, all I can say is.....
*yes, I do

...your move Deano.

Logo Tournament

So the logo of the Kings' ECHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, advanced to the "Elite Eight" in a logo tournament set up by The Hockey News- proof that opening day is just around the river bend, ideas of how to entertain are fleeting. The logos are from all leagues in hockey. What I find most funny is that lakings.com talks about "the heated battle" between the Ontario Reign and the Florida Everblades. I don't think it's a good idea to have a hockey team that has a name that has a play on words that is that corny. I gives me a bit of a chuckle every time I hear it. It's not like the Kings' either, it's not the reputation that causes laughter, just the name. Plus, I don't know if you can have a "heated battle" with inanimate objects. A battle of illustrations. C'mon... it's stupid and you know it.

One last note: Who put the logo for Pittsburgh on there? I know they lost but how did they get nominated in the first place? I guess with a name like Crosby on the back, you tend to forgive the angry Mickey Mouse on the front.

Florida Everblades.....?

Kings...Phoenix...2-1....24 days until Opening Night

I can't begin to explain how happy I was to see any sort of Kings game, let alone one that ended in our favor. It wasn't the most thrilling game; I don't think I would have made it to the second period if it weren't off-season.....yeah, I know, if it weren't off-season this game wouldn't even be playing. I know, I know...I was just saying...
It was weird not really knowing who was who. I pretty much looked at the roster for all the names that could be on the Kings roster in the very near future and just kind of kept an eye out for them. I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised at how...surprising this game turned out to be. I know that everyone was watching Doughty (he being the most sure rookie of next season) to see how he would fair. I didn't really notice much. He had a couple of eye catching plays, but it didn't really look like they were planned out. Most of his noteworthy accomplishments looked as though he lucked into them. Most of the time is was setting up camp in the net, diving into it like it was home plate. He was either drawing penalties or taking them. I still don't have a very good opinion of what I think of him as a player but I will say that I know he wants it. From past interviews and the recent getting into shape, he seems like he has a rare breed of determination and really, you have that and there is no telling the type of player you can make. Plus, he seems like he is happy to be here. You can't get that, no matter how much you pay someone else.

I like how he looks like the happiest out of all of them........doesn't know what he's in for.

There are the three standouts that everyone will be talking about. Well, not really. Just Kings fans will be talking about it. Well, let's face it, probably only about 40% of Kings fans. In any case, the three standouts (as chosen by the media) are (in alphabetical order):

1. Bernier, Jonathan #45

He stopped all of the shots that he faced (17 in total) and everyone was in love with him to begin with. I never really saw the big deal with him, personally. I'm assuming that it is the fact that he is beautiful, looks like he smells nice, and has a habit of 'accidentally' not buttoning his top shirt button.

Naughty, naughty, Mr. Future Back Up Goalie

I know that there are plenty of arguments for Bernier, but what I think is most off-putting is that he is over-hyped. Last year, people would worry about when he would be in net more than they would LaBarbabra. Ron Hextall was interviewed halfway through the game and said, "Jason LaBarbara is the only sure thing and after that it's up for grabs." I know we all knew that, but most people are thinking that Mr. Burns is a sure thing as well. I'm just saying...don't count your French-Canadians before they hatch. I would personally feel comfortable with Babs as #1 and Ersberg in #2 (hey, he is not as over-hyped as Burns*). I do have to hand it to him though, there were 3 or 4 amazing saves; a particular favorite of mine is when he shot his leg out to stop it and choked it when the rebound was pinched into the air. He also took a bad penalty for trying to stop the puck with the toe of his skate and inadvertently tripping a Coyote. I like him, I'm just not in like with him.

*Most likely his new nickname.

2. Moller, Oscar #51

The next two really are lumped together as a kind of power duo. I don't have many notes on Oscar Moller except that he started the game and what a start it was; twenty-three seconds into the game, he took a shot that shattered a segment of glass behind the net and took five minutes to repair. I like it.

The goal that he was accredited for was really just his banking on Simmonds' beautiful puck placement. Again, I don't think that this was planned because if it were, Simmonds would definitely be on the team already; Simmonds put the puck on the net and when it was barely enough to time to be considered a rebound, Moller snapped it in. I liked the surprised/happy look on Moller's face after he made the shot. It looked as though he was just trained to hit the puck and that he did it without thinking. I like that because there are way too many times when the Kings just play with the puck, passing it back and forth. Someone just needs to put puck to net as many times as it takes.

3. Simmonds, Wayne #57

I am really excited about this guy. He was the big surprise that I had hoped for in this game. I have always liked this guy for some reason. I like how his build is like Rob Blake's and was just one of those 'admiration at first sight' type of things. This was the same feeling I had with Handzus, except Simmonds is doing something (if only against a couple of rooks). I am pretty sure it's the tall and lanky attribute that makes them look like an underdog no matter their talent level and I always love rooting for the underdog, especially when it's an underdog in disguise.

I had a few notes about Simmonds, notes of noticeable talent, well, some of them. One note was about his Blake-esk build. Another was on his play making skills, how he talks with other players on the ice and adjusts to situations well. I also like how he is valiant in blocking the puck, he is like a Giuliano that cares about his physical health; he will dive for the puck and put a body in front of it but a protected part or maybe a stick or something. As I said before, I liked the first goal, just how everything lined up. The shot by Simmonds toward the net, as if he knew that Moller was spring-loaded. It wasn't nearly that magical, but it looked pretty amazing, especially in comparison to no hockey for 4 months.

Pictured: (Left) Wayne Simmonds, (Right) Oscar Moller

Here's to hockey, and the King's 15th anniversary of rebuilding! Cheers!

How was your summer, Jack Johnson?

A section in The Hockey News talks about Jack Johnson and how he spent his summer vacation in Ann Arbor. Before even finishing the small write-up, I pictured him laughing and barbecuing; maybe he is on a lake, wakeboarding.

He looks like his dad called him 'Sport' a lot.

The last thing I would expect to hear is that he was taking a full load of classes. Okay, I might believe it because I think lakings.com was asking him what he would be doing this off-season and I think that he said something about it. Other than that, the very last thing I would expect to hear is that he is taking classes like some sort of "upper-level" writing course along with American literature (I can see that one. Not too many difficult words in American Lit.), American culture, and psychology.

I like it, he really pushes the "All-American" look, takes the "All-American" classes. It's almost like it's his personal mission to incorporate more U.S. born players into the NHL. JJ has to count for at least 9 or 10 regular U.S. born players.

Kudos, JMFJ.
Swearing in your name, hair like 'amber waves of grain' and just the perfect amount of education: the most American American since Francis Scott Key. Maybe Steven Colbert, but then Francis Scott Key before that.

What's that you say? Hockey?!

Rookie Camp game tonight! Lakings.com is showing a Rookie Camp game versus Pheonix. I might watch that. Or I might just watch a taped game from last season....Royal Rebound perhaps. It's ok, I only taped the last period so it's not stupid. Anyway, I digress.

6:00 P.M. (pacific standard time*)

*Anyone else wouldn't really care.

Brad Richardson

So he gets $575,000 this year and $600, 000 next year.

And just to lump this in with the "Everybody and their mothers except O'Sullivan is getting signed" news:

Jarret Stoll gets a four year $14.4 million contract. But we all knew that one.

Richardson's mom gets O'Sullivan's job.
Stoll's mom gets Blake's old job.

Fair enough.
